To introduce students to a variety of literary works, instilling in them a critical appreciation for great literature.

To develop in students an ever-increasing proficiency in reading, analyzing, understanding and interpreting written works.

To provide students with the skills necessary to express themselves in both written, and oral communications.

Scholars must complete 4 years of English.

100 Reading

S - 1/2 credit    

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation.

This course addresses skills and learning strategies that exceed the boundaries of reading remediation to serve students whose academic success has been short-circuited because of challenges with reading comprehension, speed, auditory processing, and/or communication. Students are provided instruction and activities to raise their skill level in these areas.


150 Exploring Themes in Literature

Y - 1 credit    

Prerequisite: None.

With Classics and Collaborative readings, students will explore themes that bridge the past to the present. Evaluating literacy elements, improving writing skills, and encouraging individual reading will be stressed. Group discussions and presentations will be required throughout the year.


Exploring Themes in Literature Honors

Y - 1 credit    

Prerequisite: Teacher approval, Accelerated.

150 course students will be challenged to be more independent and be prepared to discuss the classics on a deeper level.


132 World Literature*

Y - 1 credit    

Prerequisite: American and Heroes in Literature.

This course integrates writing for a variety of audiences with a study of literature. Universal themes in literature are explored in the fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama and short stories of many cultures and many eras. Composition emphasizes research skills, multi-paragraph exposition, critical analysis and thesis development and defense.


147 World Literature Honors

Y - 1 credit    

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation, Accelerated.

147 course students will be challenged to be more independent and be prepared to discuss the classics on a deeper level.


148 Yearbook/Journalism

Y - 1 credit    

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Designed to teach students the basic techniques of publication with computers, photography, layout, editing, graphics, arts, writing, and interviewing. The class will create and produce the yearbook.
