Physical Education/Health - Elective Course
Subject Area Goals Students will learn to enjoy and understand the importance of maintaining a physically active lifestyle. Students will improve physical skills, learn the associated rules and etiquette, and learn the importance of cooperation and teamwork.

501 Dance I (7th & 8th grade)
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: None. $25.00 Performance Fee.
This course is designed to familiarize the student to dance as an art form. Many styles will be introduced through basic dance techniques. The creative process will be explored with emphasis on the choreographic elements of time, space, energy and shape. The student will complete in-class assignments, written evaluations, and dance vocabulary. There will be experiences in group work, with the emphasis on cooperation rather than competition. There will be some performance requirements for this class. Specific dance attire is required.
502 Dance II
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: Teacher Approval, $25.00 Performance Fee.
This course is a continuation of the fundamentals covered in Dance 1. More emphasis will be placed on choreography and the correct use of choreographic elements. The history of dance and the contribution of the key pioneers in the field will be studied. There will be performance requirements as well as some out of class rehearsal. Specific dance attire is required.
503 Dance III
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: Teacher approval, $25.00 Performance Fee.
This course is for the student that wishes to pursue a more rigorous and serious study of dance. Competence in a broad range of styles will be necessary. Student choreography will be required so time outside of class will be mandatory for preparation and rehearsal. Specific dance attire is required.
525 Ballroom Dance
S – ½ credit
Prerequisite: None
This class is designed to introduce the student to the basics of several popular social dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Swing, Cha Cha, Salsa, and Meringue. The student will learn to both lead and follow the basics in each dance and will be tested on both. There is one written assignment, one outside class activity and one required performance. To enhance the social skills they are learning through dance, basic etiquette for social interaction will be covered.
526 Ballroom Dance II
S – ½ credit
Prerequisite: Teacher approval
This class introduces some new dances taught in Ballroom I.: New York Hustle, West Coast Swing, Night Club Two Step, and Samba. The student will also learn some intermediate patterns in: Swing, Cha Cha, and Foxtrot. Performance will be required.
701 Kenpo I
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: None.
This course is the first step in American Kenpo. The scholar is introduced to the protocol and discipline to foster respect and insure safety. The physical portion consists of learning basic skills including blocks, strikes and stances. These are then put together into sixteen basic "Situational Self-Defense Techniques" designed to thwart common everyday attacks. The self-defense techniques are then used as a vehicle to begin the process of learning physical principles, concepts, and their applications on the human body. The scholar will also learn the history of the "Father of American Karate" Ed Parker Sr., The founder and creator of American Kenpo. The successful completion of a written and physical examination will give the scholar the equivalent of a junior yellow belt.
702 Kenpo I
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Kenpo 1.
This course is a continuation of the Kenpo 1 course with more emphasis placed on practical application of previous learned basic skills. Self-Defense techniques are moved to a more physical level. Sixteen more "Situational Self-Defense Techniques" are introduced, bringing the responsible number to thirty-two. Martial Arts History is explored at this level from the inception of modern martial arts through its cultural roots. Vocabulary continues with additional terms. Forms and sets include offensive application and the physicality of training continues its upward spiral. A successful completion of the written and physical examination will give the scholar the equivalent of a junior blue belt.
703 Kenpo III
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Kenpo 1& 2; must be in 10th grade.
Sixteen more "Situational Self-Defense" techniques are introduced. This brings the number of responsibility to forty-eight. Additionally, the concept of the "Technique Line under stress" is introduced. A written test and physical examination will bring the scholar to the rank of junior brown belt.
704 Advanced Kenpo
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Kenpo 1-3, must be in 10th grade, must have teacher approval.
Responsibility level of the scholar increases, and begins to include assisting with the instruction. Teaching insures students are assimilating the information and brings forth leadership capabilities. History is examined against the back drop of modern science and logical application. Sixteen more "Situational Self-Defense" techniques are introduced. This brings the number of responsibility to sixty-four.
709 Club Fitness
S - 1/2 credit
This class offers an introduction to a variety of classes such as, Cardio Sculpt, Boot Camp, Hip Hop, Tae Box, Circuit, Step, Hi-Low, Ball, Yoga and Pilates. Classes will be held at the YMCA as well as at Heritage Academy. Fees $30.00
750 P.E
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: None.
Emphasizes physical fitness through a program involving individual or team exercises. This class is for those who have an interest in playing various sports. The class will focus primarily on volleyball, softball, soccer, and flag football.
755 Weight Training
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: none.
This class offers students an opportunity to improve their strength and basic athletic conditioning. Students and teacher will work together to fit the individual's needs.
Individual Sports
The following are individual sports and may be taken for fun or to compete against other schools.
751 Bowling
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: None.
This class is designed to help students develop proper technique and form. Students will have opportunity to compete against other schools. FEES $100.00.
753 Tennis
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: None. $25 Fee
This class is for students interested in learning and improving their tennis skills. They will have an opportunity to test their skills in competition. The top six students will compete against other schools and clubs. FEES REQUIRED $50.00/semester.
754 Golf
S - 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: Teacher approval.
This class is for those with an interest in learning and improving their golf skills. Students will receive instruction and have an opportunity to test their skills. Lessons will be at the driving range and players will play every Friday on the golf course. The top five players will compete against other teams and schools. (Offered in the fall semester only) FEES REQUIRED $100.00/semester.
Team Sports
The following sports are team sports; participants will compete in the CAA against other charter schools. Those students enrolling in any of the following will be enrolled in the last hour team sports class. All Team sports have a participation fee per semester to cover the cost of the facilities and referees. Tax credits are available to help cover the costs.
- Girls Schedule: The fall sports class will include those in volleyball and basketball. The spring class will include basketball, softball & soccer.
- Boys schedule: The falls team sports class will be for flag football & basketball, and the spring class will include those involved in basketball, baseball & soccer.
752 Basketball Team

756 Soccer Team
S 1/4 credit
Prerequisite: Teacher approval and/or tryout.
This class is planned for those students with a high level of interest. This is a co-ed class; both boys and girls may participate. The class provides training in fundamentals of soccer, and prepares athletes for competition in the Charter Athletic Association (CAA). $100 Fee
757 Baseball Team
Prerequisite: Teacher approval and/or tryout.
This class is planned for those students with a high level of interest and skill. The class provides training in fundamentals of baseball in addition to concepts of team play. Athletes will compete in the Charter Athletic Association (CAA) against other schools. Fees $100
758 Tackle Football
This class is planned for those students with a high level of interest and skill. The class provides training in fundamentals of baseball in addition to concepts of team play. Athletes will compete in the Charter Athletic Association (CAA) and have an opportunity to compete against other teams and schools. Fees Required $400.
761 Girls Volleyball
S 1/4 credit Prerequisite: Teacher approval and/or tryout. This class is planned for those students with a high level of interest. The class provides training in fundamentals of volleyball, and prepares athletes for competition in the Charter Athletic Association (CAA).FEES REQUIRED $100.
